Well back when I was teaching drafting they were called adjustable French 
curves.

  Excellent idea. Lots of places give out these, what I thought were stupid 
  doodads, with their name on them. They are a piece of plastic or rubber 
  with a strip of metal inside. You can flex and bend them in a reasonable 
  amount of curvature. They are about a half inch wide, quarter inch thick, 
  and a foot long. Don't know what they are called though.
