Probably the nose of the punch was too big for the hole so the taper wasn't 
seating into it. I have four different sized spring loaded punches and a set of 
about 30 of the other sort which are sized to fit exactly into the hole. 
Impossible to miss with them.

  My problem is getting the drilled hole to be centered in the larger hole in

  to seat in the hinge hole but it made the mark off center as verified by my
