I once tested a mechanical level which worked on the pendulum principle which made it useful for both vertical and horizontal applications. It was a length of wood with two semi-circular shaped plastic or phenolic pieces fastened to each side. These had dots applied at 90 degree intervals and there was a steel pin pivoted at the center of the radius of those semi-circular devices which had a fairly heavy weight on the bottom beyond the pivot point.
There was a spring loaded button near the middle too which, when held down would break the pendulum so you could touch the pointer and determine it's relative location to the dots. This device suffered three problems. 1) the wooden base was only about a foot long. 2) The spring loaded button became difficult to hold while moving the device to a comfortable place to read it when necessary. 3) It was priced well in excess of two hundred dollars. The idea is brilliant, simple and should be extremely reliable and all of the above problems could easily be resolved. Unfortunately I haven't taken the time to build my own over the past 16 or 17 years since seeing that device. A nice straight beam spirit level of aluminium commercially available and modified to include such a device should be possible for only a few bucks above the regular price.
