Dear List Members:
One simple method I use when screwing vertically, is to simply hold my
drill/driver at the top and allow the machine to become a plumb-bob, and then
aligning the screw with the tool. My little drill/driver is essentially
cylindrical, so it works well as a plumb-bob. This method will not work with
the pistol shaped drill/drivers.
I have also drilled a hole through a block of wood, using a small drill
press, and then sawing the block through the whole. The resulting notch on the
end serves as a guide when starting a screw.
I also agree with the comment that true vertical is not necessary, and may
not be as strong as a little angle screwing.

                Yours Truly,

                Clifford Wilson
