The easiest way I found is to feel the slots the plug goes in. The negative 
goes on the size with the long slot and the   positive on the short. In most 
cases, if the ground hole is downward, the negative is on the left and the 
positive is on the right if the front of the receptacle is facing you.

  Hi,
  In the mail today, i got my talking multimeter. Now what to do with the
  darn thing. i mainly got it to test the heating mats I am putting under my
  tile. if I don't test them at several points during the install, the
  warranty is void.
  How would I test an outlet to make sure I got the hot on the right screw?
  i am sure I will think of many many uses for it.
