We had a central vac system in the house I grew up in. My dad had it installed around 1972 or 73, I was still seeing so it couldn't have been much later than that. It was a retro fit in a two story colonial with a basement. Granted, it was a long time ago, but I don't remember any walls being ripped out or anything like that. The piping for the second floor ran up through an interior wall. There was a powered head for the carpeting, but it used it's own separate cord that plugged into any random outlet around. There was no power with the piping or hose.
