It's been years since I used my wood lathe which could be described as just
below the bottom of the line. No reason a blind person can't do well with a
wood lathe. My best advice is "practice." For me, initial rounding of
cylinders required first using a gouge and then a square-nose or skewed
chisel to finish the rounding. One took small amounts off at a time using
the gouge initially. Setting the tool rest properly is the first thing to
work on and adjusting it slowly inward as the work progresses maximizes
control or so I seem to remember. The height of the rest should place your
tool parallel with the centers. The beveled side at the end of the chisel
points toward the floor when the chisel is held flat on the tool rest. One
of the current wood workers will undoubtedly give better more up to date
advice, but hopefully this will encourage you and make it clear that a blind
person can use the lathe and do well. Don't forget the safety goggles even
it the eyes don't work. Stuff getting into them isn't much fun and lots of
little wood chips will be flying as you turn and shape the wood. Using a
faceplate is a bit trickier and I would wait till I had experience just
turning cylinders before getting into that.
