Hi Tom, quite a few years ago I was going through a box of hand tools that a neighbor was cleaning out of his basement. I was lucky enough to find a center punch with a 1 quarter inch shank and a point ground at a steep angle. It turned out to be the perfect tool for marking a center point through a disk cut with a whole saw. If you can't find a punch with a 1 quarter inch shank you might try rapping a few layers of tape around a punch with a smaller diameter, or even try marking the center using an old quarter inch drill.

The whole saws I've seen have a 1/4Th inch center bit which makes for a bit of a large hole for punching through, but a bit of care should get you pretty close. Thanks, i'll remember this if I ever get my small lathe set up. Tom [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
