My parents, who were second generation Eastern/Central European immigrants,
always referred to the thing we had in our living room as a "settee".  My
understanding was that a "settee" didn't fold out to be used as a bed the
way a couch might.

We also had a "sofa" where the same cussioned surface you would sit on was
folded out to make a bed, as opposed to a couch where you might remove the
seat cushions.
