Being built in 81 chances are roots won't be the problem. The main line is probably cast running to the city connection.
Are you running into problems anywhere else in the house? Do other toilets flush normally? Do any of the showers back up? If you want to match the volume from a dish washer while checking another drain line, run the garden hose into the tub or other sink and turn it on full force. Watch for any back up while it's running. You can always fold the hose to stop the flow while it's being turned off so flooding shouldn't be a problem. Probably seem like silly ideas but if it helps keep from digging a big trench it's not so silly... If you have a crawl space consider what one of the other guys said already. Put a clean out in the vent stack. Not all that hard to do and you can then run a snake through the clean out. I'd try everything before continuing with the dig... The reason the plumber doesn't like digging is probably the wires running near by. He's responsible if he cuts one.
