Shane, that union is there for a reason. Gas lines do need a pressure check. Normal operating pressure is one half psi or one quarter psi approximately depending on gas, in your case probably one quarter. That is the pressure the meter has to regulate out into that line. There is no way to pressure check the line for leaks with out it facing the meter unit and possibly damaging it to cause bad regulation afterwards. One can not install a gas cock to shut it off from the meter either because they leak under pressure checks making a pressure check impossible. So now the problem is how to connect a checked gas line to a meter when neither can be turned, solution is a union that ties the two together. A union allows future repair without cutting the line or running all new. That is before the new plastic gas lines with all compression fittings. ...................bob
