Rob, I have had two Sears water softerers over the last twenty years. The
problem you are describing is very common.

Firstly, if you haven't added salt in over six months, your softener is not
working.

You need to chip out and remove the salt in the softener but don't thro it
away, it can be used again. As you remove the salt, you will probably find
a void under it where the salt has been used up. After you have removed the
salt, pour in a new bag or two of fresh salt. Then recrush the chunks that
you removed and add them back in. This should put you back in business.

To avoid this problem from reoccurring, I take a broom handle or rod and
polk it into the dalt in several different spots about once a week or so.
This will ceep the dalt from crusting over on the bottom and allow the salt
level to drop as the salt is used up by the softener.

Hope this helps.

Steve

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] water softeners

HI, I have a sears water softener and it seem to be working all right but
the salt in it is all hard like a big peace of cement. Also it has not
needed any salt for over 6 months now so I really wonder if it is really
working right. Just to let you know I have a well here do you guys think I
should chop up all the salt and get it out of the softener and put new salt
in it???
THANKS ROB FROM MINNESOTA
