They make a back check valve for that purpose. It don't let anything back, the 
problem though is that if there is some back pressure closing it off it won't 
let your sewage out either.

  Removing traps in or near a main sewer line that is a common run by many 
other parties can make your line to it a weak point. If you are lower in 
elevation than others if there is a partial blockage below your location, all 
buildup will take a path of least resistance. A trap in your line will restrict 
back flow somewhat.
