Scott, A sliding bevel allows you to wrap or bend the square into or around a corner. Then you can take it to a saw and line up the cut, you don't actually have to know the angle.
I have one that has a fin in the middle that bisects the angle so that if you are trying to mitre a corner cut, you line up one leg of the square with the fence of the saw, and the blade of the saw with the fin on the square.
