Well folks, after a lot of cursing, learning, purchasing a few new
tools, I finally got the first flooring project completed.
Lessons learned. First don't choose a hallway as your first
experience to laminate floors. Hallways are full of doorways and such
that makes life a bit more complicated. Secondly it is true that
measuring multiple times is a wise thing to do, but we should add one
more thing to the measure twice cut once rule and that is check
carefully to be sure none of your flooring has slid out of place. This
can cause the "measure twice - cut once" rule to go right out the
window.
I have one more room to do and that's the living room which is a nice
rectangle, has currently two doorways which one might be going away
and finally I have a much better idea as to what I'm doing.
So, thanks to all for the advice and such. I told my wife I wouldn't
do it again, but then yes I would. grin.
So, I'm sure I've forgotten some lessons learned, I'm sure there's a
number of tricks and tips I could benefit from. Is the project
perfect, hell no, not by a long shot. I have a couple of gaps, most of
which quarter round will cover, but the gap at the doorframe is not
going to be covered so I'm not sure what the hell I'll do with that. I
might try to fabricate a piece and glue it in there and hope it will
not be to obvious.
I took care to avoid this, but in the end it was just not worth trying
to cut a new piece, it was a real nightmare to fit it at the top of
the steps and I sure have beaten the hell out of the doorframes
getting them cut and so forth to take the flooring. So, yeah, I
learned a lot and had fun in any event.
