Try setting the sides into place first. Cut them the length of the door jam plus the 8th inch reveal then tap a nail just through the piece top and bottom so you can set each side piece approximately correctly and hold them there then cut the top piece to settle down between the sides, when the correct length it will have the correct reveal and be centered between the side members, can't fail.
The trouble though is that door frames aren't necessarily exactly square so the miters may not necessarily be precisely 45. This is one reason why many frames aren't mitered. If you really need to set the top first I suppose you could make a jig with the reveal and mitered projections at each end to hold at the top of the frame so when the top member is correct it settles into place and you can then nail it off. I have never done this but it would work. Hope this helps. ----- Original Message ----- From: Michael Baldwin To: [email protected] Sent: Sunday, June 29, 2008 11:19 AM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] trim Hi, Anyone have tips for installing trim around doors. I seem to have an H of a time with it. I bought a couple of precut packages to copy for the rest of the doors, but I have troubles getting the top piece centered and with the proper 1/8 lip on the door frame showing. Some install with none of the door frame showing, but I don't care for that. The trim I have will be installed with mitered corners.
