A frozen water supply when you need water in an emergency isn't all that useful 
cracked barrel or not.

Wonder though if it would be worth while mounting them in the attic space 
appropriately supported, insulated and with a little heat and enough plumbing 
to drain and refill when necessary.

Again I too am mostly thinking out loud.

  Just thinking out loud here. If you insolate the top pretty well, so that 
  the top doesn't freeze first, then as the rest freezes it will push up 
  and, if you leave head space, it should be OK. Maybe wrapping the top 
  half of the barrel in bubble wrap or old blankets would do the trick.
