I assume she is referring to the operating par of the coffee maker rather than the pot itself?
If so, the commercial products are just mild acid, vinegar will work about as well though you may want to run two lots through. Say a cup of vinegar in a pot of water, run the cycle then repeat then run clear water through for one cycle to remove any residue much as you would for a commercial product and your coffee maker should run like new with all the mineral scale gone.
