I have a maple in my front yard and have the same problem. I have been told by my county extension and heard on the You Bet Your Garden radio show that putting in dirt over the roots will kill the tree.
My plan from researching the topic and some things I have seen at other properties, is to put down an edging of some kind around the dead zone under the tree. I will then lightly mulch it and give up growing grass or anything there. I want to start some ivy around the edges on the inside too. I want to fill some dirt over some exposed roots cause the grade of the yard has caused some dirt to move away and the roots present a trip hazard. So, I wanted to put the dirt down and then cover with a little mulch which will help keep the dirt from becoming a mud pit at the same time. So, would this cause any harm to the tree? I would not mulch up to the trunk, just in the area where I've place the dirt. tnx Scott Howell [EMAIL PROTECTED] [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
