Actually that was a penny. You weren't supposed to see the top of Abe's head.
The cross bars Ray talked about are very noticeable to the touch. If you can
get your finger tips into the tread enough to easily feel the bottom of the
tread, dragging your finger inside the tread walls in either direction around
the tire will bring you to the wear bars. Basically they are ridges running
crossways to the treads.

They make tread wear indicators. It's a little tool with a large shoulder and
what looks like a plunger running vertically. You set the shoulder on top of
the treads and push down on the plunger. When it bottoms out there is a
reading that shows to tell the depth.

For us that can't read the tool, you can use the brass set up bars. If my
tires get within an eighth of an inch, they've out lived their usefulness as
far as I'm concerned. I've been in enough wrecks in my time and the way it
rains down here an eighth or less will let you hydroplane like you're on ice.

use to be a rule of thumb about a nickle. if the tread didn't go past
the top of the head. then it was time to replace the tire.
Not sure how good it was, but saw a lot of tires sold in the station that way.
