One of my first jobs was working for Kawasaki way back when. We carried Bell
helmets and some off the wall brand that was legal but cheap. When guys would
get in my face about the prices of the 2 brands, I would tell them "you buy a
10 dollar helmet for a 10 dollar head."

Ah, I didn't think of the brass bars. I was hoping that there would be
something else like the push down tool that garages use that could be used
  by the blind.
I usually change the tires about 5/32 but 1/8 brass bar is still close
enough. With all of the snow that we can get I often change this time of
year at 3/16. Something that has haunted me for many years was what my dad
said to me. When I was a kid I had enough money to buy a car and had no
license. I had a lot of friends that had the license and no car, so this
worked out great. Anyway my dad drove it for me to get new tires, I was
looking at the cheapest and he pulled me aside. He said the value that I am
putting on the tires is the value I am putting on my life. Ever since, I
carefully monitor the tire wearing. Just got tired of taking it to be
checked frequently. Tomorrow the 1/8" brass bar goes to check the depth.
  Thanks

Actually that was a penny. You weren't supposed to see the top of Abe's
head. The cross bars Ray talked about are very noticeable to the touch. If
you can get your finger tips into the tread enough to easily feel the bottom
of the tread, dragging your finger inside the tread walls in either
direction around the tire will bring you to the wear bars. Basically they
are ridges running crossways to the treads.

They make tread wear indicators. It's a little tool with a large shoulder
and what looks like a plunger running vertically. You set the shoulder on
top of the treads and push down on the plunger. When it bottoms out there
is a reading that shows to tell the depth.

For us that can't read the tool, you can use the brass set up bars. If my
tires get within an eighth of an inch, they've out lived their usefulness as
far as I'm concerned. I've been in enough wrecks in my time and the way it
rains down here an eighth or less will let you hydroplane like you're on
  ice.

use to be a rule of thumb about a nickle. if the tread didn't go past
the top of the head. then it was time to replace the tire.
Not sure how good it was, but saw a lot of tires sold in the station that
  way.
