Dan, I see no problem drilling a 3 quarters to 1 inch hole in the webbing of this load baring beam. I'm really surprise there's a steel beam in your home. I'd start of with a 1/8 inch bit, then 1/4, then 1/2, and then what ever your finishing hole size is going to be. Just keep in mind, you want to drill at a slow speed, especially when making the pilot hole or you'll burn your drill bit up.
