Lee, it is not below sea in the Mississippi delta. It isn't more than 2 feet
or more above the gulf. It is mostly bayou, swampy, marsh mush. What isn't
swamp is sand. A good portion of New orleans is below sea level. In the
parish where we worked ( 40 miles below New Orleans )there is a place where the
dikes aren't very far apart. Single story houses are below the dike level.
Katrina hit almost dead center on Sulfer Spring where Diamond is located. A 25
foot tidle wave came in over the dike. When it was all over the dikes held the
water in. The army corp of engineers had to blow the dike to let the water
out, but that was weeks after it was flooded. It is still a waste land of
trash and building parts. Seventy per cent of the people never came back. If
you were born here and this is the only life you ever knew, it would be hard to
give it up. It is funny to have a 4 lane highway down here, and almost no
traffic at all, everyone is almost gone.
