I don't think anything extra is needed. If it happens again, just roll up on the ball of that foot and that will raise the rest of your foot off the tread. Then you can take time to collect yourself and step back on or off which ever you choose. I would think a guard would be more of a trip hazard than a help. And unless you plan to make it tall enough that you can't step on it, the guard will probably trip you worse than the belt.
