R J, the water alarm we have runs off a 9 Volt battery . we lay it 
near the  sump hole and it  too has a piercing sound  most important I 
have found out is to feel around in that cold water sometimes to make 
sure no grocery bag or something has not fallen  in.we are all one day 
closer to summer. Hooray.Lee
