If all you need to do is to make a slot for the tape to pass through, that 
should be easy enough.  As long as it isn't a production question where 
several have to be done in a run.

Take a 1 eighth drill bit and make 4 holes as close together as you can in a 
vertical row.  Do this on both ends of the slate.  You should be able to use 
an exacto knife, sometimes called a drywall knife, to trim out the left 
overs.  You can find very think files to do the same thing at hobby shops or 
at some of the home centers.
