one of my first unbearable handyman projects was to restring one of those. 
I was 18 years old and new nothing about methods.
It didn't have a broken string, but the little hook had popped loose; and 
shot up the side.
I remember sitting in the window nearly all night long, listening to 
concerts and  such on the radio as i tried and tried to get it done. 
Finally did.
