I am in the process of relocating my loading ramp and holding yard for the
sheep. The last time I had a lorry come to pick them up, there had been
quite a bit of rain, but on the day the lorry was to come, the ground, when
I walked across it, felt fairly firm, but, as later events were to prove,
there is a considerable difference between me and a ten ton stock lorry!
When the driver stopped at the gate to open it and then tried to regain
traction, the wheels of the lorry dug ruts, in which a battle ship could
have been floated.
To prevent this happening again, the relocated ramp and holding yard will be
on, what I hope, will prove to be an all weather foundation.
The holding yard will incorporate a covered shed, and I will have to find
some way of dealing with the runoff from the roof.
To this end, when the digger is here banging in the piles for the ramp, I
will have a pit dug which will be partially filled with rock. In this pit,
will be two plastic 200 litre plastic drums that have had their tops and
bottoms removed and they will be filled with shingle. The runoff will be
directed into these drums. The drainage pit will then be covered with soil
so that the grass can regrow.
