Take a lid of a can and use it as a backer. Had the same problem until I did
this on the doors in the house. I use the lids I open with one of the can
openers that cut off the seal of the lid.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] hollow doors and knobs

I have some folding closet doors, which are hollow. I have installed
a knob and although they have not come off, they always seem a little
loose. I suspect that because they are hollow, pulling on the knob
flexes the door just enough to keep the screw a little loose and well
you can't tighten it up, but so much as well. So, what I wanted to do
is either find a washer that would distribute the load a little more
or find some sort of insert or sleeve the screw could fit inside of
that would have some type of flared end that would take some load off
the screw I guess. Well before I do anything, thought I'd ask some of
  you experts for any thoughts.

  tnx,
