Well if he is reusing the burner assembly as in it being gas he will likely
lhave problems since the thermostat control goes into the side of the tank at
the bottom. If he is going to do it strickly manual and hand light the burner
it should work as long as he plugs the inlet and outlet holes at the top of
the tank. You say he is taking the top off. Do you mean the top of the heater
case or the actual tank inside. If he removes the tank from the housing and
uses it just as a container then that is what it is. If it is electric using
only the top element, which will become the bottom when turned over may work.
Hopefully he intends to keep the new top side open so there will be no build of
steam which could result in explosiions, but if open it isn't more danger than
a big pot on a stove.

  Subject: [BlindHandyMan] old water tanks

    Guys,

I think a friend is making a dangerous mistake and I want your thoughts on
this please. He wants to take the top off of an old hot water tank and then
turn the thing upside down and use it like a big cooking pot. Not for actual
food, he wants to use it to dye fabric, but this still involves boiling water.
So if it can be done, can it be done safely?

  Jennifer
