Hi Rob, Yes, you can rip a log length ways. But you should use a ripping chain your saw came with a cross cut chain. Having said that, I have ripped some and its harder then it looks, when starting the cut kick back is a huge threat.Also good balance is hard to find. I believe they make a splitting maul that's like a slide hammer so no swinging, use it for the first split. Well that's my two cents. Archie
