I looked over my chemical shelf and found a long forgotten can of something called Goof Off. It smells like lighter fluid which someone suggested earlier. The instructions on the can say to try it on an inconspicuous part of the item so I began on the bottom. It will take off the finish if you rub too hard. However it did take off the tape stickum so I guess we can close this subject line.
