I had a similar problem a few years ago. My fill tube for the ice maker
fell loose on the inside, this caused some of the fill water to run behind
the rear freezer wall. The water froze all over the evaporator coil and the
defrost cycle wasn't long enough to melt all that ice, but it melted enough
to cause the pan to overflow.

I took out the back panel and sat a space heater on the floor and aimed it
into the freezer. I had to empty the tray every ten minutes or so, until
all the ice melted. It took a few hours, but it finally melted and I put it
all back together and connected the fill tube with a small dab of caulk to
keep it from falling off again. Every thing worked fine after that.

In every frost free refrigerator we have ever owned part of the condenser
was under the water collection tray. The heat causes the defrost water to
evaporate before the next defrost cycle. If everything is working right
they never have to be emptied. When they start overflowing that's a sign of
trouble in the system.
