Greetings Keith,

Happy Veterans Day!

My home is painted cedar sided. It is a tan shade of paint. Dirt and mold
show fairly easily (not as much as a white paint). I get mold and mildew on
the outside siding as well. It is usually on the North side where the sun
doesn't dry the moisture as well. The other sides may have some mold and
mildew but it is far harder to see. If that north side were not shaded by
an Oak tree and got the prevailing sun and wind to dry the moisture up, it
wouldn't be noticeable.

I am not sure about the stucco and how that might take to cleaning with a
cleaner and mildewcide. There are tens of hundreds of mold and mildewcides
out there that work well with some physical exertion. Some are concentrates
and once diluted to the proper strength and be put on with an extended
handle brush and then rinsed off. Others can be used with a power washer
(not sure about cleaning stucco). This is set up by reading the power
washer users guide and the mold, mildewcide label directions.

I used the extended handle brush system with a mold and mildewcide that I
found at Home Depot and Lowes. I cleaned my house which is cedar sided and
my Mom's house which is vinyl sided. Just brush it on and then rinse it
off.

If you are concerned about the mold being inside and going through the wall
to the exterior let me recommend that you have someone sighted go to that
particular inside wall and check it first. If it is not there then ask
yourself the following questions: 1) Are there any water lines in that
wall area? 2) have there been any roof, window or exterior wall water
intrusion problems. If the answer is no, then, my next thought would be to
have someone check the stucco out to see if it has deteriorated and allowing
water intrusion into that wall. If the answer is no to all of these
questions, there is a great probability that the mold may simply be
naturally occurring from the climatic conditions (shade, north side of home,
moisture, etc).

Mold and mildew is everywhere and certainly, under the right conditions will
grow on one's home exterior.

Best,

Max in SC

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Mold on the outside of my house

Hi,

My wife has spotted some mold that is growing on the exterior of my home.
It is in a corner where the eve meets the house. It looks like it is on
the stucco, but may be on the wood as well. What is the best way of
removing it? I'm going to look around for more, but I am concerned. We
have termites too! The house is falling *smile*

Does mold start growing because of the moisture in the air and nutrients
being available on the outside? Or can it start on the inside and work its
way out? My kids have been getting sick lately and wonder if it could be a
contributing factor.

So, if you have recommendations on how to treat the areas along with clean
up or protective gear, I'd appreciate it.

Thank you,

Keith
