Ron, I did not see a lot of response to your post so i thought I'd add my two cents. The 800 + choices you found as a result of your search must have considerable duplication as I don't think there are that many vendors our there. I have only used one model and that is the VIP talking thermostat. The website is:

The directions that accompany the unit are very blind friendly and the unit can be installed without sighted assistance if needed. The unit is easy to program or simply use as a standard thermostat. Visit the website and write back with additional questions if needed.
