If I might chime in here. I purchased a Ryobi 1 & 1/2 HP that uses 1/2 inch shank bits. This router was $99 at Home Depot, that was a few years ago. My first was a Craftsman 1/4 inch shank and a bid did snap off on me. Nothing was hurt but it really scared me. As far as bits I agree with Dan. On advice from a friend I purchased a 50 piece 1/2 inch shank bits on EBay for $55 with shipping. Not bad for about a dollar a bit. These gave me the opportunity to toy with them. I quickly replaced the ones that I regularly used with better bits. Also that cheap set has a fairly nice storage case. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Dan Rossi" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, November 18, 2009 10:57 AM Subject: RE: [BlindHandyMan] Using a Router
AH HA! I knew it Al. You are heading down the dark path of tool ownership. All is lost for you my friend. You can get routers from the typical 79 dollar low end up to several hundred bucks. You are always best to get something a bit above the bottom end though. Bits mostly have a specific use, so you would need a few different bits to do much of anything. Luckily, you can get some inexpensive starter sets that will give you a good selection and idea for what they do. Sometimes it can be difficult to imagine what the profile looks like from the shape of the bit because the bit is a negative image of the profile. Or the profile is a negative image of the bit, guess it depends on your point of view. -- Blue skies. Dan Rossi Carnegie Mellon University.
