I recently watched a video about building a book case. They discussed the proper way to screw the pieces together. The pilot hole through the first piece was the same diameter of the screw with threads. The pilot hole into the second piece was the diameter of the shank of the screw. So, the screw should pass freely through the first piece then grab into the second piece and the head will pull the first piece against the second piece.
