Dan, A few weeks ago Karen read an ad for a set of step drill bits. We can't 
remember where the sale was to go back and check them out. After reading 
your post they make a lot of sense now. The only step bits that I have is 
1/8 to 3/8 for pocket screw holes

I recently watched a video about building a book case.  They discussed the
proper way to screw the pieces together.  The pilot hole through the first
piece was the same diameter of the screw with threads.  The pilot hole
into the second piece was the diameter of the shank of the screw.  So, the
screw should pass freely through the first piece then grab into the second
piece and the head will pull the first piece against the second piece.
