What are the candles standing on? Might it be a conductor with a pin or maybe
even iron filings in the bottom of the candle to assist conduction?

I didn't se the article all the fuss is about so maybe I am way off base.

There had to be a hidden battery somewhere. Those candles are so big it
wouldn't be hard to hide several molded into them. A wire under the table
  would complete the circuit.
