The old way of wiring for multiple switches: When using 2 switches to operate
one light, each will be a three way switch. When more than two switches are
used, 2 three way switches are used at the end switches and a switch between
those two will be a 4 way switch. Each additional switch needed at a location
will be a 4 way switch. So, the first and last switch will be a 3 way and all
other switches will be 4 way.
The new way to wire switches is all are the same except one. Everything
is done with electronics. One (the first one)is set to be a master and also
controls the lights for dimmer purposes. What makes one the first is the power
line goes to that switch first. It tells all the other switches what dimmer
level to go to. All switches can bypass the dimmer action and go full light
and also back to dimmer level if wanted. Also included are wireless remote if
wanted. Carry one in the car or a pocket. Soon there will be one remote
capable to turn all lights on in your house by the numbers.
The main thing with electronic switches as is dimmer switches, all power
must, repeat, must be off to install or the electronics are blown.
