The so called 3 way switch is actually a single pole double throw switch.
The so called 4 way switch is a double pole double throw switch witch has
been internally wired to be a reversing switch. lets call the screws A B C
and D. In one position of the lever the circuits are from A to B and
another independent one from C to D. When the position of the lever is
changed the circuits are from A to D and C to B. These used to be sold as 6
way switches with all six connections brought out and the electricians had
to wire them themselves.

Regards.
