You will be very unlucky indeed if you hit any of the original screw shafts with your new screw.
You might check too if the original screws are in fact Philips screws. they may be the square drive and superior Robertson screws which is why your Philips driver is stripping them. Generally they get stripped going in but are fine on the way out if you bear firmly and straight down on them.
