If you're doing it for coding concentrate on the computer braille and leave contracted braille alone. The reason for this is that you as a new student will get the two codes mixed up since both use similar symbols for different purposes.

I use braille exclusively (or try to anyway) on linux and windows.  I use 
either an 40 or 80 cell one line display depending on desk space.  Yes they are 
expensive but for code I find them indispensible.  Especially if you are 
working with code that uses lots of short names.
