Thanks to all who have made suggestions. First: I downloaded ubuntu and flashed it to a USB stick.
Next: I got my mind changed (probably for the nbetter), so I downloaded Slink and flashed it to another USB stick.
Now I have two USB sticks that each contain a version of linux. Assuming I'm gonna go with Slinnt, do I now have a bootable working copy of Slint? Or is there more to do before I'm actually running linux?
