Here is the commit message from Trac that explains why there were so many
whitespace changes:

1.0.1dev: Stripped all trailing whitespace, and fixed the tests that
relied on its being present. This was a ticking bomb, and is especially
annoying when using an editor that strips trailing whitespace (as it
should), because it will add noise to every changeset. I know that this
will make it slightly more difficult to apply patches that contain the old
trailing whitespace, but theres an easy fix for that: strip trailing
whitespace from the patch as well.
