I saw Ralph perform in Garner, NC this past Saturday night. I would have gotten his autograph, but when I passed by where Ralph was sitting and signing, he wasn't smiling. In fact, he looked extremely uncomfortable. I didn't want to disturb him.
I must say, overall the concert was good, but...there were a few things that were kinda sad. First, Ralph walked on stage after his band introduced him and said they were supposed to play at least three or four numbers so he could rest. As far as I know, he did another show that same day, but it ended around 4. This was about 8:40 when he took the stage. Ralph also explained why he needed notes to a few of the songs - because he couldn't remember the words. Folks laughed, but I don't think he meant to be funny. I think he was just being honest. At one point. the audience called out requests and Ralph said, "I can't hear." People laughed at that, too, I guess thinking he was joking again. I noticed that Ralph Stanley II kept looking at Ralph Sr., expecting him to chime on in certain parts of songs, but he didn't. Ralph also stumbled over a few words and forget a few, as well. Now, I know he's 75 and probably VERY, VERY tired (who wouldn't be?). Heck, I wouldn't want his schedule. I was wondering if maybe he was simply tired on Sat. or if anyone else noticed any of these same things. Also, I was shocked that the band didn't use a lot of the old material with Carter. There were lots of good songs to choose from, but some of them I'd never heard before. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I saw Ralph and I think he's worth another ticket. I'd go see him again. But I'm wondering if what I saw was a result of his personality or if he was just tired. -christy Bluegrass Bulletin Board brought to you by the fan club of Dr Ralph Stanley & His Clinch Mountain Boys subscribe or unsubscribe at http://drralphstanley.com/
