My mother was born and raised in the Missouri Ozarks, near Joplin, and she used to sing a lot of old folk songs when I was a child, which she had heard from her grandmother and others. I felt like all of this is part of my heritage - it is in my blood.

* That, sir, is the key word right there.  "It is in my
blood."   Which is indescribable, but we who have it
in our genetic blood, understand it.  Like.... the mountains are also in my blood.  I can never explain
*how*  I feel when I'm creating my own trails traipsing
through the mountains like a billygoat on two legs.
It's deep inside of me.  Like the music is in you too.
Make sure you teach your family the same thing that
you learned at the knee of those who taught you roots.
We're trying not to lose it and to keep it going.

....Johnny Cash.

* There is a movie coming out on his life story soon.
From my understanding... 10 yrs in the making.  Me
personally, I just consider him "country" with a little
hip-hop beat to his folsum melodies.   Now June Carter and the Carter Family?... there's a touch of Gospel
Bluegrass.   Johnny wasn't really Bluegrass as much as
he was Country Music, Rhythem & Blues with a ton
of HonkyTonk Rock & Roll. (only my personal opinion, which ain't worth a quart of pure sorghum).

So in my little pantheon of folk music heroes and heroines, I would include both Cash and the whole Carter Family. But no one should ever overlook the work of Joan Baez.

* I hang my head and have to admit that that era of
folk music never rang my bell.  I've been "Mountain
Soul/ Mountain Music & Bluegrass" all my born day.
I grew up actually singing on the wide, long porch in
a holler in the southeast corner of KY,VA and TN.
"It's in my blood."  <smiles>  So... do you listen to
Gillian Welsh, Lucinda Williams, Iris Dement, Emmylou Harris, Arlo Guthrie, etc. ??  (smiles)  See?  I'm not totally ignorant to the Folk Music Artists but I admit the only ones I truly fancy are Gillian and Lucinda. They have "the blood" in them.  (again, my personal taste)

(she even managed to fake the accent with incredible accuracy) <<regarding Joan>>

* GASP.  You mean she faked it??  Lol.  just teasin'.

In short, you might say that it was Baez who did more to bring it to the public eye than anyone, or at least she had better results than anyone.

* GASP again.  You mean "Oh Brother Where Art
Thou" didn't reawaken people?  .... now I'm really
elbowing ya' in the ribs to tickle ya'.

Has the Stanley family ever had much communication with Joan?

* I dunno Bryant.... I would tend to think SHE would
find the honor of communicating with a Stanley.  :o)

I would bet anything that if Dr. Stanley were to try and get hold of her she would jump at the chance.

* I bet she would.  <grinning REAL big now>  I kinda'
think his duet sweetheart is Patty Loveless. <wink>

Thanks so much for your kind words. I really am honored by that. God bless Dr. Stanley and all of the Stanley family!
Bryant

* It's been a fun conversation.  Just remember me as
a teaser.  Laughter does the soul good.... and so does
Mountain Music.   God Bless you too. Have a happy
day and find something to chuckle at .... besides my
spelling.   lol.  Dr.Stanley is enjoying the beach area
of Myrtle Beach this weekend.  (I'm envious)  :o)
I hope he stops in at Crabby Mike's and gets some
all-you-can-eat Crablegs..... doesn't that sound like
a good Thanksgiving wknd meal??
Your new friend,
Renee'
