>> If anyone out here can be so kind as to slip me a line with names >> of other artists that make you feel the way I do about The Stanley >> Bros. (arm hair raising)it would be greatly appriciated.
> Of course, Nobody can make you feel like the Stanley Brothers do, > But just as one example the Osbournes have some pretty kickin stuff > eh gang? I love the Osborne Brothers. Those classic Decca sides from the 60's were amazing. It's a completely different sound of course...they were perhaps a bit more "pop," commercial, & used drums, electric guitars, piano, steel, etc. on their records (not that there's anything wrong with that). They were clearly going for a radio-friendly sound (nothing wrong with that either). Someone sent me a DVD of a collection of their appearances on the Orpy & other syndicated TV shows in the 60's. That Sonny was a hoss on the banjer, & what a voice Bobby had. I heard he was one of Carter Stanley's favorite singers. But I take "like the Stanley Bros...arm hair raising" to mean more of that lonesome, mountain modal, bluesy feel the Stanleys were known for. If that's what you mean, I might suggest the following contemporary bands: Blue Highway James King Del McCoury Band ...& some older artists like: Dock Boggs Roscoe Holcomb Also, see if you can get a copy of "That High Lonesome Sound: Films of American Rural Life and Music By John Cohen" "That High Lonesome sound compiles 3 landmark films by John Cohen, a member of the folk group The New Lost City Ramblers, who has also devoted much of his energies and talent to documentary filmmaking. These films weave raw intimate images of land, people and work into a portrait of Appalachian life, connecting the sound of American traditional music with the source of its power." He shot it in Kentucky & Virginia, filmed locals who make their own music, filmed revival meetings & primitive Baptist services, filmed an appearance by Bill Monroe in the town square in Hazard, all in grainy black & white. Lots of lonesome mountain music there. I believe Shanachie, the same folks that put out the Rainbow Quest videos, distributes the film, their site is at: http://www.shanachie.com/ bw ****************************************************************** BUDDY WOODWARD - [EMAIL PROTECTED] - - - - - - BUDDY WOODWARD & THE NITRO EXPRESS http://www.buddywoodward.net - - - - - - THE DIXIE BEE LINERS - bluegrass with a buzz http://www.dixiebeeliners.com ****************************************************************** Bluegrass Bulletin Board brought to you by the fan club of Dr Ralph Stanley & His Clinch Mountain Boys subscribe or unsubscribe at http://drralphstanley.com/
