I love the Osborne Brothers. Those classic Decca sides from the 60's were
amazing. It's a completely different sound of course...they were perhaps a
bit more "pop," commercial, & used drums, electric guitars, piano, steel,
etc. on their records (not that there's anything wrong with that). They
were clearly going for a radio-friendly sound (nothing wrong with that
either).

Someone sent me a DVD of a collection of their appearances on the Orpy &
other syndicated TV shows in the 60's. That Sonny was a hoss on the banjer,
& what a voice Bobby had. I heard he was one of Carter Stanley's favorite
singers.

But I take "like the Stanley Bros...arm hair raising" to mean more of that
lonesome, mountain modal, bluesy feel the Stanleys were known for. If
that's what you mean, I might suggest the following contemporary bands:

Blue Highway
James King
Del McCoury Band

...& some older artists like:

Dock Boggs
Roscoe Holcomb

Also, see if you can get a copy of "That High Lonesome Sound: Films of
American Rural Life and Music By John Cohen"

"That High Lonesome sound compiles 3 landmark films by John Cohen, a member
of the folk group The New Lost City Ramblers, who has also devoted much of
his energies and talent to documentary filmmaking. These films weave raw
intimate images of land, people and work into a portrait of Appalachian
life, connecting the sound of American traditional music with the source of
its power." He shot it in Kentucky & Virginia, filmed locals who make their
own music, filmed revival meetings & primitive Baptist services, filmed an
appearance by Bill Monroe in the town square in Hazard, all in grainy black
& white. Lots of lonesome mountain music there. I believe Shanachie, the
same folks that put out the Rainbow Quest videos, distributes the film,
their site is at: http://www.shanachie.com/
