But comparing them to the E36 M3 is comparing apples to oranges. They are NOT the same car, contrary to popular belief. The E30 M3 was designed from the get go for one specific pupose: Homoligation into the DTM series. It was a dumbed down race car with enough civilty incorporated to make it a semi-livable street car (personally I like it, but that is a moot point). The E36 M3 was "supposed" to be its successor, but in many ways it is a totally different beast. It was designed to be a hard line "street" racer, for which it performs its duty quite well. It was NOT, however, designed to be a race car dumbed down for the street like the E30. Don't get me wrong, The E36 M3 is a fantastic machine as is the E30 M3, but it is evolution of the product: there is no way another E30 M3 type car could be marketed by BMW and sell; the E30 M3 was a tough sell when it was new. They HAD to make it a bit more civil, otherwise it wouldn't sell. The numbers speak for themselves. Personally, I'd like to have both, but as I can only afford one, I chose the E30 simply because it is more rare. Soon enough, the E36 M3 will fall into the same catagory as the E30 M3: cheap enough so that the enthusiast can afford it. Give it time. Also, the Sport Evo III (E30) was only available in Europe just as the Evo E36 was, so comparing the 2 is pointless. On that note...<stepping down off the soap box>...it doesn't matter what you drive, it's how you drive it that matters (and that you enjoy what you drive). Will Mitchell '88 M3...different car than the E36 M3 by far (but still just as enjoyable) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Jan 2000 17:47:27 -0800 From: Tad Laird <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Subject: [uuc] ti passing M3 >LarryH wrote: >Most ti owners report catching and sometimes passing any M3 in the >twisties, and the >supercharger makes it possible to blow away almost >anyone on the straights. Must have been an old tired e30 M3 (just kidding) or maybe I missed something. Haven't seen any cars in my rear view mirror lately. I'd love to lead a ti through some twisties. Sounds fun and it's always nice showing the racing line to someone. It'd take a "very special" ti and driver to pass or just a muck up on my part. Capable of doing a full season of GT racing without rebuilds. An anecdote in the Paul Rosche retirement story in the September `99 Roundel told of a missed shift and subsequent over-rev on one of these engines. It was delivered back to BMW for an exam but the engineers looked it over and said it was fine. That same engine finished the rest of the season (including Le Mans) and went home with the FIA GT championship. Having the best hardware and drivers who can be fast yet not abusive on machinery probably helps too... I have a good idea of how Honda's VTEC and Porsche's VarioCam works... how does BMW's VANOS (single and double) compare from a mechanical and practical standpoint? VTEC is a stepped(?) system utilizing small hydraulic pistons that lock rocker arms so a central high lift cam lobe actuates the valves rather than the economy lobes. VarioCam uses a chain that is varied in tension to affect cam phase changes- it is stepless(?). Past years have done good jobs with this but those events were billed as family events as they were held in the summer. This event is in October, when most kids over 3 are in school at least some of the time. It is, therefore being billed as a grown-up event and no planned kid activities are in the offering. You might check with the hotels to see which might suggest the best accomodations in the form of day care or evening babysitters so you can at least attend the banquet in peace. My 3 daughters will stay at home, and, out of obvious necessity, so will my wife. :^( Wish Grandma was available. The website (www.oktoberfest2000.org) has cursory hotel info at this time and will be expanded by the time registration begins on April 1. There are about 5 hotels with blocks of rooms reserved. The Hyatt-Regency downtown Greenville is where the vendor display will be housed and it will probably fill up the fastest. However, it is the farthest from the Zentrum and all event sites and is in downtown, so you may find other hotels better suited for trailer parking, and conveniences. Some hotels may not have released the reserved blocks yet or you may need to tell them that you are with the BMW Club and deal directly with them and not their central reservations system. Remember to register for the event when registration opens as the registrations will cap at about 1000 folks. Good Luck. Hope to see you there. - -Phil Marx ------------------------------ End of [uucdigest] V3 #96 ************************* _________________________________________ | Please visit these UUC-approved BMW parts vendors/service providers: | (listed alphabetically) | Bonneville Motorwerks . http://www.bonnevillemotorwerks.com | Circle Tire Co.
