Subject: [uuc] E28: Power locks dead after dull knife surgery

Hi everyone,

Almost finished with the fix-em-up tasks on the '85 535i I picked up a
couple months ago. Just a few sizable tasks left like the A/C and the broken
subframe steering box support (anyone ever encounter this??).

The issue at hand this weekend is the power door locks. They aren't working.
If I activate the driver's door lock from the inside, I can hear the relay
quietly clicking in the box in the passenger footwell, but no door lock
action. I should say that I removed a cheap alarm system from this car when
I bought it. Most of the alarm wires were crimped onto the existing BMW wire
looms above the driver kick panel and inside the front driver speaker
compartment. My light indicator panel above the rear view mirror is also
completely dead. I realize that, with the previous alarm system install, it
could be anything preventing this from working, but I thought I would ask
just in case anyone has encountered a similar door lock not working and/or
light panel nonfunctional symtoms in their E28.

Many thanks,

Scottie Sharpe
BTW, lots of stuff for sale, including some diamond jewelry and a hot rodded

Why not call it the MSAV or something like that? We now know you don't have
to have the series number after the M with the M Roadster and M Coupe. Just
a thought.

Even as a teenager in the 1980s I could tell that MT was shit. I much
preferred C/D, though it went downhill after David E. Davis left. Then I
switched to Automobile. Now I just go to Border's get a cup of coffee and
read them all for free.

The most interesting thing in MT used to be the TireRack and Discount Tire
Direct ads. But I'd rather go their web sites and use the little 'see
different wheels on YOUR car' thingies.

OBMWC - I'd pay cash money for back copies of MT, C/D, R/T or Autombile that
feature the E34 540i.

I bought a brake caliper painting kit for my M3 before I knew that it
doesn't stand up to the heat generated by race pads. It is the good stuff -
the $50 Folia Tec kit. You even get the wire brush I bought to clean the
calipers (assuming I can still find it).

There is only one kit available and it is absolutely free, including
shipping in the US. To get it, you will need to go to our website and fill
out a request form. Feel free to look around while you are there! Under
the section that says enter your parts request, type in Folia Tec, followed
by something - a joke, why you want the kit, etc. You will not be put on a
mailing list or assaulted by any other devious scheme. The recipient of the
kit will be selected at a random whim from all entries received by 5PM EST
on Monday evening. Direct responses to this email will be ignored.

I'll tell you what, let's keep it simple....
You bring your E36 330csl prepared however you want to prepare it.
I'll bring my M3....the real one, you know the one Rosche actually paid
attention to.
Kershaw, seems like you are in the Carolinas, I'm in North Jersey. How
about we split the difference say, Summit Point.

Does anyone have any (or know of someone who does) BBS RC wheels for sale?
I have the 17x8s on my M3 now and would like some on the MB E320 as well.
18x8.5 would be cool, or another set of 17x8s would do.

Thanks for any leads you may have for me.

Subject: [uuc] <E46> Free brake duct backing plates

We have designed brake ducting systems for several models of BMW. We now
need to get a set together for the E46 328 and M3. So...we need to borrow a
car. You can bring it to our shop in Radford, VA (SW part), or we can
arrange to meet you at a convenient location - a parking lot will work. We
will need about an hour with the car. During this point, we will jack the
car up, remove the wheels, remove the rotors, and cut away the factory
splash guard. We will then computer model a plate to replace the splash
guard that will force air into the inside of the rotor to cool it under
track conditions.

For the generous use of a car, we will send the owner a test set of plates
and then a finished set in either blue powdercoated or a special polished
stainless finish, completely free. If you would be willing to help, please
email me at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

From: "Rob Levinson - UUC Motorwerks" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Subject: Re: [uuc] Re: honost, what is that

I've got to side with Gario on this one.

Ben Liaw's E30 M3 (now gone) was relatively stock. We had a FATT at Summit
and there was a new SVT Cobra in my run group (and I think the owner may be on
the UUC Digest to verify this story). Had a lot of fun with him, leaving him
through the corners so badly that he was just able to catch up by turn one
again... only to leave him again through 2-5.

I did give him a point-by eventually as I wanted to see what the other way
'round felt like. Yes, I filled his mirrors everywhere except the front
straight, turn 10 to 1 when his hp advantage let him pull ahead. Considering
his brakes (or lack thereof), I would catch up by turn 2.

Keep in mind the M3 was on street tires (Dunlop SP8000) and I am *not* a
seasoned track veteran, I can count my track days on the fingers of two hands.

The Cobra driver and I had a good laugh about it afterward. He exclaimed
"man, I couldn't keep up with you in the corners at all, but your wimpy
4-cylinder was no match on the straights!" So what... driving perfectly
straight is the boring part of the track. I told him I thought Ford could do
a little better given 10 more years of development!
His reponse, "Oh, just wait until I do the suspension in this thing."
I replied, "Yeah, do the suspension - it might be almost as good as the stock
suspension in this old M3."
"Yeah," he replied, "but I've got a lot more motor."
"Sure, now. Let's see how well that car runs in 10 years. IF it's running."

You pay for more than raw power in any BMW, especially the E30 M3. You pay
for the engineering and durability. As far as turbo Eclipses go, when was the
last time you saw an old Eclipse? They just don't last. You do see a few
around 5 years old... usually smoking like an old Merc diesel. As a veteran
of a number of Japanese sports cars, I think it's safe to say that much of the
'80s and early '90s models are designed to be disposable.

Some free advice: don't go "pink slips" against Gary - it's a sucker bet.

Really? When the oil is white, what amount of water is mixed in? I would
have thought a lot.

Anyway, to sort it out. Send an oil sample for analysis. If the oil
cotains glycol, then the water comes from your rad, you must pull the
head at the least. If there is no glycol, then it is condensation and all
you need is an Italian tune up.

in fact, my '85 535i had one side of the subframe steering box support
break just a couple months ago, around 210k miles. as i was backing out
of a parking space, there was a muffled pop and suddenly straight no
longer corresponded to a centered steering wheel.

i had a shop weld it back together. they charged me about 1 hour
labor, and it's been fine for the last couple months/thousand miles.
the alignment's still a bit off; i think it must have been aligned
with the mount partially broken.

Does anyone know how to measure fuel injection pulses? I would like to be

A mere Quarter Millenium? Pish Tosh! ;) The Weihenstephan

the German Meisterwerk for almost an Entire Millenium, since

Of course, it's better when it's fresh. I used to bring it
